Transmission lines carry power from generating stations and solar parks to substations and on to the distribution network. With large solar capacity coming up in Rajasthan, transmission projects are a key part of the state’s infrastructure. Building a line is a sequence of carefully planned stages, each with its own checks.
1. Route survey and alignment
A walk-over and detailed survey selects the most practical route, avoiding settlements, forests, water bodies and other crossings where possible. Modern surveys use GPS, total stations and satellite imagery to prepare the route profile.
2. Check survey and tower spotting
Using the profile and sag templates, engineers decide exact tower positions and types — suspension, tension or angle towers — while maintaining required ground and crossing clearances.
3. Right of way and approvals
Landowner consent, compensation processes and clearances for road, rail, river or forest crossings are handled before or alongside construction. Delays here are among the most common reasons projects run late.
4. Soil investigation and foundations
Soil type at each location decides the foundation design. Excavation, stub setting with templates, reinforcement and concreting follow, with curing before tower erection.

5. Tower erection
Galvanised steel members are assembled and erected piece by piece or in sections, using derricks or cranes. Bolts are tightened and punched, and earthing is installed at each tower.
6. Stringing
Conductors and earth wires are pulled using tension stringing machines so they do not touch the ground. Sagging is done to the design table, followed by clamping, spacers and jumpers.
7. Testing and commissioning
- Final inspection of towers, clearances and hardware
- Insulation resistance and continuity tests
- Charging of the line after statutory inspection and handover
Safety throughout
Work at height, heavy lifting and live-line proximity make safety planning essential: permits, fall arrest systems, temporary earthing and trained crews.
