Road quality depends as much on the right machines as on the right materials. Each stage of road construction — from earthwork to the final wearing course — needs specific equipment, used in the right sequence. This guide explains the main machines and how contractors plan them.
Earthwork and grading
- Excavators: cutting, digging drains and loading material
- Loaders and backhoe loaders: moving and loading soil and aggregate
- Motor graders: shaping the subgrade and granular layers to the right camber and level
- Tippers: carrying earth and aggregates
Compaction
- Vibratory soil compactors: subgrade, GSB and WMM layers
- Tandem rollers: bituminous layers
- Pneumatic tyred rollers: kneading and sealing bituminous surfaces
- Water tankers: moisture control during compaction

Mixing and paving
- WMM plant: produces wet mix macadam for the base
- Hot mix plant: produces bituminous mixes such as DBM and BC
- Sensor paver: lays WMM and bituminous layers to accurate level and thickness
- Bitumen sprayer: prime and tack coats
Concrete roads
Rigid pavements use batching plants, transit mixers, slipform or fixed-form pavers, texturing and curing equipment and joint cutters.
Planning the machine mix
Match machine capacity to the daily output planned in the schedule. The hot mix plant, paver, rollers and tippers must work as one balanced system — a bottleneck in any one slows the whole job. Plan preventive maintenance and keep critical spares on site.
